Businesses are no longer able to edit the description field in Google My Business. According to Google, this field will now only display in Google+ and may be edited there. Google indicated there will be new features coming soon that will improve the way you can describe your business to users in search engine results and on Google Maps.
With this recent update, we thought it would be a good opportunity to provide a refresher on how to set up your Google My Business page.
Locate your business
The first thing you’ll need to do is navigate to business.google.com and log in with your Google account (i.e. Gmail or Google+). Once you’re logged in, you will be directed to locate your business by entering its name and address.
Review and submit business information
Next, make sure all of your business’ contact information is correct. Having correct contact information makes it easier for potential customers to find and connect with your business when conducting online searches.
Submit for verification
The final step is verification. Google does this to make sure that only business owners or people responsible for managing a business’ online presence have access to manage Google My Business pages. Google provides business owners with a few options to verify their business listing.
The most common verification method is by postcard, but you can also verify over the phone and in some cases receive instant verification. If you choose to verify your business via postcard, you will receive a PIN in the mail within a few business days. Once you receive the postcard, log into your Google My Business page and enter the PIN to complete the verification process. This will give you the ability to update and manage your page going forward.
Engage with your customers
One of the most valuable benefits you will receive by managing your Google My Business page is the ability to engage with your customers through online reviews. Feedback contained in online reviews will give your business insights into what is working and what you can improve.
